So it looks like Brendan Rodgers will be officially named the new manager of Liverpool Football Club within the next 48 hours.

I see unity between Steven Gerrard and Xabi Alonso. When Alonso arrived, Gerrard could have felt marginalised. The Spaniard turned up at Anfield, a compatriot of the manager, and arguably an even better passer of the ball. Gerrard was suddenly less crucial in his old role at the heart of the midfield, and pushed further forward. The two men could have ended up hating each other, jealous of what the other represented.

But they don’t. They’re clearly good friends, and most importantly, they share a hefty mutual respect. There is some overlap in their skills, but also essential differences, such as Gerrard’s pace and dynamism, and Alonso’s calm assurance. Gerrard seemed to instantly trust Alonso with the ball, understanding he was here not to compete with the captain, but to improve the team.

Together, on the same wavelength in numerous ways, they are far more dangerous than two equally talented players interested only in their own success.

Look at the goal Gerrard scored against Sunderland. Gerrard and Alonso exchanged passes deep in the Sunderland half, and nothing looked on. Then the captain made a fantastic early run in behind the full-back, well before Alonso had looked up. It is the kind of run you only make if you trust the man on the ball to not only spot, but to spot in time and to release the pass with the correct weight and necessary precision. And it was perfect.

”How can I think of leaving Liverpool after a night like this?”

a particularly good episode of HankGames in which John talks about why he’s a Liverpool fan — may or may not have made me cry like a little girl. For years and years when I was little I’d sit on the sofa and watch West Ham play with my dad and sing I’m forever blowing bubbles and later, paolo di canio x4083980 and it’s just such an important part of my childhood. My grandpa was an Everton supporter and in Mexico everyone I know supports the Pumas — you have your team, you have your ties. I’d never really thought of that being one of my earliest introductions to fandom, fan history and so on, but I suppose it was.

(Thanks, Rosi.) I think one of the things that is underappreciated in fan communities like the HP fandom or Doctor Who or whatever is the extent to which it really IS similar to, say, the Liverpool fandom. Obviously, I’m not defending all of sporting fan culture, but to me it has been a way to connect to a story (the history of my football club) in a deep way that also connected me to other people (fellow supporters) and allowed me to feel like a participant in the narrative (In soccer, fan support really is the lifeblood of a club, because the club is not guaranteed to continue as a professional organization the same way teams are in most American sports.)

Anyway, in the end, my relationship with Liverpool is not so different from my relationship with Harry Potter.

In which John Green continues to exceed my expectations of what a stellar human being should be. And he likes Liverpool, so. Win.
